Why Did Jesus Have to Die? Bible Study

Each year during Lent, Christians journey toward the cross. We sing about it. We read the story. We hear familiar phrases about sacrifice and salvation. But many of us still carry quiet questions: Why did Jesus have to die? What did his death accomplish? What does it mean for my life today?

This Lent, Pastor Derek will be leading a six-week Bible Study that explores our worship theme, “Why Did Jesus Have to Die?” Together, we’ll engage Scripture, reflect on the different ways Christians have understood the meaning of the cross throughout history, and consider what Jesus’ death reveals about God’s love, justice, and saving purpose.

This study isn’t about finding one simple answer. The church has long spoken about the cross through many faithful lenses — sacrifice, healing, redemption, victory, love, reconciliation, and more. Rather than canceling one another out, these perspectives help us glimpse the depth and mystery of God’s saving work in Christ.

Along the way we will ask:

  • What do we need saving from?

  • What does it mean to be “at one” with God?

  • What are we saved for?

  • What does it look like to live a cross-shaped life?

Whether you’ve been part of the church for decades or are still exploring what you believe, this study offers space for thoughtful conversation, honest questions, and deeper faith.

Two Opportunities to Participate:

  • Sundays immediately following worship, beginning February 22 through March 29

  • Wednesdays at 7:00 PM, beginning February 25 through April 1

You are welcome to attend either option. We hope you’ll join us as we journey toward Easter and explore the life-giving mystery at the heart of our faith.
